Dear James,

Commonsense is s good prescription for enjoying Mexico. Most violent problems are the settling of claims between drug gangs. Kidnappers want a quick pay and turnover, which likely means someone among the Mexican elite with cash available. I view the whole situation like the Capone era in Chicago. Citizens were occasionally harmed in some crossfire, but for those who didn't seek out booze, visit speakeasies, had legitimate employment and went home to their families at night, they saw headlines but went about their business.

I just drove from Laredo to Oaxaca, via Zacateca, San Luis Potosi, Lagos de Moreno, Leon, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Ixmiquilpan, Actopan, Zacatlan de las Manzanas, Puebla, Oaxaca, Teotitlan del Valle and Mitla. Passed through the four seasons, elevation and latitude will do this, but with out any difficulty. A friend of mine had very good dental work in San Luis Potosi, and there are many dentist serving the ex-pat community in San Miguel de Allende. You should have no difficulties, either with crime, or in finding a dentist.

Best regards,

Dick Davis

We live half time in the bahio of central Mexico and there is a lot less crime there than most US cities. Although we drive to and from Mexico, I would not spend much time at the border. From Florida, I would take I10 to Houston and then US59/77 to Harlingen and then cross at Los Indios.
Pretty easy day drive Harlingen to San Luis Potosi and even Queretaro, Zacatecas and San Miguel de Allende.
Dental services tend to be surprisingly good and very reasonable. I did some research for a friend and found that you can do "Dental Vacations" with Mazatlan very active. I used the following site.
